Season 2011 has been a highly successful year for the Castlemaine Goldfields Football
Club. Achievements on the field across all age groups have shown a continued development
due to the commitment of all coaches, players and parent. My position in the club this year
has allowed me to see the diverse range of people that come together to share their
knowledge and enjoyment of the best game in the world.
The season started with our popular family fun day, which saw many mixed age and gender
teams come together for a day of fun football activity. This year’s funday had a number of
special guests, as we combined the Annual event with the official opening of our new rooms.
Representatives of many of the supporting groups were on hand as the State Member for
Northern Victoria, Donna Petrovic congratulated the club on its growth, acknowledged the
hard work done by the committee and volunteers leading up to the opening and wishing the
club ongoing success for the future. On the day it was also great to catch up with some of the
founding members of the club, as well as a number of life members, who all shared my
sentiments about how great it was that the club has a home.
The senior Pre-season was then upon us with coaches Paul Simms and Glen Springate
organising an intense and demanding regime with a diverse range of player in terms of age,
ability and cultural differences. It was very pleasing to be a part of the playing group and
watch as our young players developed confidence and belief throughout the year as they
encountered many new challenges. Matches played in the Loddon prison, against the wily
gOld spice team, and the Derby with Daylesford, along with several intraclub games provided
many different opportunities to develop our football skills. These games in combination with
core strength and flexibilty exercises with Yoga Guru Cheryl Dingle saw the team commence
the season with impressive results and bold headlines. I would like to thank both Paul and
Glenn for their work in the club this year
While this was happening, Gary James was renewing his ties with the club and took over the
role as Ladies team coach from Terry Atwood. Terry had been very busy with commitment
with the gOldspice boys and wanted to focus his energy on his playing this season(with very
positive results). The transition was very smooth and the Ladies hit the field running with a
balance of young players and a few returning stars combining for an excellent season of
onfield performances.
The Junior coaches were all very busy this year as we welcomed new coaches, players and
indeed teams into the club. A big thanks must fit in here to our registrations officer Andrea
Broughton, who managed to keep everyone up to date with the registered players, the new
processes and the changes that evolved in the first month of competition. Thank-you’s must
also go to the coaches, managers, parents and players who have worked together
throughout the season, creating a great atmosphere of support, inclusion and enjoyment for
all that have had contact within the club.
Onfield results this year have been amazing, with the Division One team finishing in the top 4
and reaching the KO Cup final, the Ladies team undefeated at home all season to finish in
3rd and a number of Junior teams reaching finals or remaining undefeated for the season,
however that is not where the success ends. We have this year been able to run a number of
social events at the ground, further strengthening the sense of belonging. Pie nights,
barbecues and pizza nights shared amongst teams, combined with practice games and
multi age training sessions have helped to install a level of pride and community that has
really taken hold. We were able to host both our junior and senior presentations at the
ground, with both events showcasing how significant the new rooms have been.
Having facilities that are amongst the best in the league has also increased our ability to
attract members of the wider sporting community to our grounds, helping to further raise the
club’s profile in the Shire. A number of schools have utilized our facilities this season with a
potential flow on effect for the following season. I believe the Club needs to actively promote
itself at the beginning of next year to continue to strengthen numbers and support. Planning
is underway for an exciting weekend of Football in February 2012 as the Castlemaine
Football Club host an international Masters Football 9’s competition at the Chewton ground.
This event has the potential to attract new people to the club with many members of the
Chewton community supporters of that other style of football.
With the continued support of the Mt Alexander Shire council, the dedicated volunteers at the
club, support from the Football Central Victoria Administration and FFV and the amazing
player and parent support that we have enjoyed this season, the future of the club looks
bright indeed. I look forward to supporting the new committee in 2012 as my work
commitments are not clear at this point and I will be stepping aside from the role of President
that I have held this year.
I would like to thank all of the current committee for their hard work this season, together with
the coaches, parents, supporters, sponsors, friends, families and players that have
contributed to the successful season that was 2011.
