Div.2  Castlemaine V Ballarat Forest Rangers
Div.1 Castlemaine V Ballarat Forest  Rangers
There were mixed results for Castlemaine senior men's teams on their debut games in the
Ballarat & District Soccer Association.  A very youthful  Division 2 side, largely made made up
of last years under 16's and some young players returning to the club played out a very well
disciplined 1st half against a seasoned Forrest Rangers team.  The Mainers played some
nice football, with Oscar Wood commanding at the back and Hugh Feary leading the line
well. Castlemaine enjoying  a wealth of possession, creating opportunities to score but could
not convert their chances.

The 2nd half started pretty much the same but within 10 minutes of the start  Forrest Rangers
scored against the run of play through a combination of tired legs and a couple of individual
errors. Even with the battling Ben Jeffreys, Patrick Wallace and Martin Myles putting in a good
shift, Castlemaine capitulated conceding three quick goals to give the final score an
evenness which was not a true reflection of the game.

With a full pre season, the Division 1 side entered the match full of confidence and their
game reflected that. Some excellent possession football meant Castlemaine dominated for
large parts of the first half. However 20 minutes into the match against the run of play a
spectacular own goal from skipper Paul Simms put the Maine behind. This only spurred the
home team on and they continued to play their game and search for an equalizer, creating
chance after chance but could not finish the moves off. Still 1-0 down with 10 minutes to go
the Castlemaine coaching team rolled the dice and reverted to three at the back and three
upfront. The players responded superbly and put the Rangers defence under the pump. The
Forrest Rangers defence soon crumbled under the intense pressure and with 5 minutes to
go Angus Maclaurin scored the well deserved equaliser for Castlemaine with a sublime
assist from Sayon Souare. With the Maine pilling on the pressure for the last 5 minutes,
Castlemaine had more chances to score but couldn't snatch the winner, a great team
performance.
