Goldfields Women score big win
The final road trip of the season for the women’s team was to take on bottom-of-the-ladder
Truganina Hornets.
Despite a number of regulars missing, Castlemaine controlled the match from the first
whistle.
Kicking into a stiff breeze for the first half, the ball was difficult to direct but Kate Forrest, Ruby
James and Eve Merton adapted quickly with short accurate ball transfers, preventing the
Hornets strikers from getting a touch in their half.
A string of corners eventually saw a great curling delivery from Jayde Steer headed solidly
into the net by Bridget Woods.
A second shot minutes later when Lyn West sent a pass to Bridget, appeared to enter the net
and bounce back into the keepers arms but no goal was awarded.
Lyn, who had been bringing goal kick after goal kick to ground with precision heading,
copped a ball to the face and left the field with a blood nose.
Playing with the wind in the second half proved equally tricky and again Castlemaine’s
trademark passing with Shelley Hillman and Rachel West getting involved, kept the
Truganina touches to a minimum.
Maya Cook-Tonkin scored her first goal ever and in quick succession Angela West capped off
a great individual run to beat the keeper and Lyn, returning to the field, sent a free kick
bouncing beyond the reach of all the Truganina defenders.
Molly Forrest battled hard in the midfield sending in some great throw-ins and had several
penetrating shots before Jasmine West slotted a fifth goal.
Truganina made several changes and their sweeper, who had held things together down
back, was sent forward and in a brilliant individual effort managed to outrun everyone and
scored for the Hornets with just seconds left. The final result a 5-1 win to Goldfields.
The last match for the season is at home on Sunday.

Women Finish With a Big Win
The Goldfields Women’s team finished off the season in fine style with a resounding 6-1
victory over Laverton.
Hat-tricks by Tahneee Ollerton and Bridget Woods were highlights in the win, which was the
team’s 14th from 18 games this season.
Coach Ray West was delighted with the season in which his team finished third of 14 teams
in State League 4 West, only missing second spot and promotion by a whisker.
Tahnee Ollerton got the first goal last Sunday, running on to a brilliant pass from Jasmine
West.
Despite significant passages of possession, however, further goals didn’t come.
Midfielders Iona Moller and Edwina Reid kept feeding the ball back to the goal mouth but
Laverton held tight and then stole an equalizer just before half time with a lone forward
carrying the ball and shooting over Cat Gaggin’s head.
In a confusing back line error, Laverton’s keeper failed to take the ball cleanly following a
Castlemaine throw in deep on the wing and Tahnee again struck, this time striking like a
cobra.
Bridget Woods followed up with two great headers from corners by Lyn West and then Jayde
Steer.
Molly and Kate Forrest, and Eve Merton, were not allowing any rebound from the Laverton
defence to penetrate and eventually Tahnee scored her third goal after some great passing
between Shelley Hillman and Angela West.
Bridget then scored her third. Great chips over defenders by Lyn and Iona created a loose
ball running goalwards for her to chase down and tap into the net.
The final score of 6-1 was the result of a great team effort and a wonderful way to finish the
season.
