Goldfields Mixed Success in Deep Freeze

Windswept Victoria Park could have been renamed Arctic Park when Castlemaine’s men’s
teams took on Vic Park on their home pitch on a freezing, Ballarat Sunday.
It was hot soup and thermos tea on the sidelines as Castlemaine’s Division 2 team got the
day off to a rollicking start by claiming the full three points for their hard-earned 1-0 win.
In a slogging affair on a slippery pitch, ‘Maine keeper Tim Gingell made some outstanding
saves to keep a clean sheet. It was the fourth time this season the Mainers have kept
opponents scoreless.
He was well supported by central defender Jim Kourkoulakos and left back Daniel Woodlock,
along with hard-working midfielders Otto Van Pagee Anderson and Dean Nendick.
But it wasn’t until late in the game that a corner won by elusive striker Gabe Gianni was
cleverly flicked on at the near post by attacking midfielder Aiden Windle for the goal that broke
the deadlock.
Castlemaine continued to attack in the dying minutes of the game with Dean Nendick going
within a whisker of adding a second goal.
The win took the team to equal fourth on the ladder going in to this weekend’s bye.
Castlemaine’s Division 1 team showed admirable resilience after falling behind to a 30th
minute goal that came after Vic Park sliced open the ‘Maine’s defence with precision passing.
Apart from the 0-1 deficit at half-time, the team also had to deal with a host of injuries that had
the dressing room looking like a MASH unit.
Tristan Evans (leg) was substituted after 35 minutes and Angus Campbell (groin) at the
break, while keeper Gabe Gianni strained a thigh muscle, sweeper Oscar Wood tweaked a
hamstring, central defender James Leversha hobbled on sore knees and tough midfielder
Jono Burris kept up his endless running and hard-as-flint contesting despite a painful hip.
A Vic Park goal from a goalmouth tangle gave the home side a 2-0 lead.
Despite the setbacks, the Maine had the better of the second half and dominated the final 15
minutes, finally scoring via a Tristan Van Pagee Anderson shot that hit the upright and was
then bundled into the net by charging striker Quinn Livingstone.
The switch of winger Taro Muller to left back for the second half paid off handsomely as his
verve and speed provided a constant springboard for attacks.
Right back Harley Dingle and “Big Jim” Leversha both played with passion and poise while
attacking midfielder Angus Maclauran added dash and class on the ball.
Joint coaches Terry Attwood and Glen Springate were well satisfied with the grit and
enthusiasm of their charges, and felt they were unlucky not to have drawn the game. Final
result: Vic Park 2, Castlemaine 1.

U14
It was story book stuff with the 'Maine providing a positively pulsating performance, so much
so that if the watching crowd had had to pay an entry fee, they would have agreed that it was
money well spent.

Ben Kennard notched a first half-trick with three sublime strikes, the first a crisp volley
straight from a corner, the second a juicy one from almost half way and the third a peach of a
drive from 25 metres.

At the break, Castlemaine lead 3-1 with more goals to follow.

All credit to the opposition, who fielded a couple of chaps from their younger side, and came
back into the match after the break.

Scores see-sawed, with Rama Ragg-Hansen scoring with two minutes to go to level scores
at 4-4.

Then Ben Kennard did what Ben Kennard's do best and pushed a ball forward, ran it down
and slotted it past the Stingers 'keeper for a memorable 5-4 Castlemaine victory.
U13

Fresh from watching the matches in warm Brazil, Castlemaine u12s took to the pitch with
only nine players against Strathdale Victory on a wet and cold day.
Eli set Strathdale on their heels with a scintillating direct run and a commanding finish to
score the opening goal of the match for Castlemaine.
The ‘Maine was relieved not only to score the first goal but with the addition of another player.
However, Strathdale responded by employing a wide running game that stretched a tiring
Castlemaine as the game progressed.
The home team ended the match with six goals while Castlemaine produced two goals.
Castlemaine’s second would not have been out of place in Brazil at present; Jimi’s crossed
ball from the right wing into the top left corner of the goal was a memorable goal.
Three best players were Wilson Staples, Eli Saunders and Jimi Fawcett.
