Goldfields Women Nail Down Third Spot
Another dominant display from the women’s team at home has ensured they will finish the
season third on the ladder.
Maribyrnong Swifts arrived at Soldiers Memorial Park, Chewton, with no bench nor linesman,
but their goalkeeper played the game of her life for 20 minutes, deflecting everything
Castlemaine sent her way.
Shots from Angela West, Lyn West and Iona Moller in midfield, all landed safely in her grasp.
After her first five attempts went high, wide or in reach of the keeper, Bridget Woods finally
slotted the ball into the net to break the drought.
However there were to be no more for the half.
Thankfully Kate Forrest and Ruby Huzzey combined to keep Maribyrnong from penetrating
with any threat.
After half time, Shelley Hillman and Edwina Reid were brought into the mix and contributed to
promising build ups around Castlemaine’s box, and a run of corners.
Frustratingly, it was another 20 minutes before a score was registered. Tahnee Ollerton met
a great cross from Jasmine West and cracked it into the net well out of reach of the keeper.
Claudia Doolan performed clinically in the backline, thwarting any Swift’s strikers, and Eve
Merton guarded her wing solidly.
Molly Forrest had several shots that fell just short and eventually, with joint pressure from
Ruby James, Tahnee scored a second goal with 10 minutes to play, sealing the 3-nil win.
Castlemaine continued to pepper the goalmouth but Maribyrnong held firm despite tiring legs
and the warm conditions.
Men
Despite their best endeavours, the men of Castlemaine Goldfields Football Club could not
match the might of Ballarat last Sunday at Chewton’s Soldiers Memorial Park.
In Division 2, Castlemaine surprised the top team early in the match, bettering it in the
midfield through the work of Dean Nendick and Aiden Windle.
The Mainers took a deserved 1-0 lead to half time after Seb Lukazek flicked a lovely corner
past the flailing Ballarat keeper in a move he and Gabe Gianni had been practising at training.
The lead looked solid until a bizarre patch midway through the second half when Ballarat
broke loose to score three times in five minutes, virtually putting the match out of the home
team’s reach.
Thence forth, the two teams slogged it out on even terms again, ending the game at 3-1
Ballarat’s way.
Better players for Castlemaine included tenacious Dean Nendick and hard-working Aiden
Windle, along with Jake Bovill, who showed pace, poise and even panache at times, in his
defensive marking role.
Division 1
The very skillful and well organized Ballarat team had Castlemaine defending grimly from the
start, and before the 10-minute mark had scored twice.
But then Steve “Rhino” Marsh and Jono Burris dug in to help out in front of young centre
backs Joe Gingell and Oscar Wood, and Paul Hovius and James Leversha at right and left-
back blocked the rivers of supply down the flanks.
As a result, the game ebbed and flowed on more even teams for the next half hour.
The Maine’s goalkeeper, Tim Gingell, got a nasty crack to the ribs late in the half but bravely
soldiered on, only to have insult added to his injury when the Ballarat striker who had collided
with him scored from a penalty four minutes before the break.
Tim had to be replaced by Paul Hovius at half time.
Ballarat came out after the break to score twice more in 10 minutes to take a 5-0 lead with
still 35 minutes to play.
Again the Mainers dug deep, though, refusing to give up. With Paul Hovius making some
confident saves, Angus Maclauran combining flare and grit in midfield and Joe Gingell
sticking to his task doggedly on creative Ballarat striker Michael Lockyer, the Mainers
regained poise and conceded only once more for the game.
Coach Terry Attwood was satisfied with the performance of his young team, noting that five of
the opposition goals had been conceded in two 10-minute windows in each half.
“Sort that out and we’ve had a good game,” he said. “They (Ballarat) are a good team with a
lot of players to choose from. We’ll just keep developing our young players and our own
method of playing.”
Castlemaine’s men play their final game for the season against North United at Moreshead
Park, Ballarat, this Sunday.
U13
Castlemaine travelled to Epsom for its final home-and-away game and put on an impressive
display of junior soccer.
Yau-ka Lam opened the score for the visitors with a well-executed shot out of the opposing
keeper’s reach.
Epsom’s defence was broken down again before half time by a goal from Cohen Saunders,
giving Castlemaine a 2-0 lead at the break.
In the second half, Castlemaine imposed its dominance with a high standard of passing and
ball possession, resulting in goals from Charlie Shooter (2), Eli Rogers, and Cohen
Saunders.
An outstanding performance right across the park from Charlie Shooter with good support
from Eli Rogers in attacking midfield and Javid Hashimi gave the visitors the boost they need
as they prepare compete in the upcoming semi-finals.
