Division 1
Castlemaine Goldfields FC put last weeks dire performance behind them with a much
improved effort at the weekend. A strong Vic Park side were often second best to the 'Maine'
for much of the game and were lucky to be 1-0 up at at the break. With Simms commanding
at the back and some excellent work from Wood and Burris in the middle of the park the
Castlemaine side looked destined to grab all 3 points. However a dubious early 2nd half
goal against the run of play for Vic Park and multiple missed chances by Castlemaine saw
them 2-0 down. The boys from Chewton snatched one back with 30 minutes to play and then
dominated a lively encounter for the rest of the game without reward.

In the words of the coach: this game extended the team! Our defense was tested in the first
half by early attacking movements from Golden City. However we maintained the strong
defense line that we had often practiced and, along with the exceptional skills of our
goal-keeper, kept Golden City to one goal. Then came our opportunity: a stolen ball and a
passing movement through the middle that split Golden City defense. The result: a goal of
such speed and dexterity that those watching were left wondering who scored that goal?
Score 1-1. Late in the half we took advantage of some confusion close to the Golden City
goal and scored. The half-time score 2-1.
We began the second half with our defense being tested once again by a fast and talented
Golden City. Our line was breeched. The scoreline 2-2. The tension rose. For the rest of the
match players on both sides were challenged to lift their game to break the deadlock. Both
teams rose to the occasion with fast attacking play matched by strong determined defense.
The 2 all draw was a fitting result. Players from both sides had extended themselves in their
efforts to break the deadline.

U14
An entertaining and extremely close first half, with the Maine giving us good us they got
against a well organised Spring Gully team. Chances went begging at both ends, although
the opposition did net one just before the break.
Despite solid performances from Milla Houghton, Jasper Berry-Smith and Ben McDonald
and an overall standout showing from Audrey Butt-Merton, who tenaciously tackled, chased
and generally harried the opposition throughout the match, the opposition made further
inroads, scoring a further three times, after half time, to lead by four to nil.
With ten minutes to go the home team clicked, Ben Kennard took on the opposition defence,
left them spectating and finished with a certain panache to get one back. Shortly after the
same player played a delightful through ball to Oliver Gunter who duly found the back of the
net to halve the deficit.
Hopes of a comeback were high, and although the team went on all out attack, time was
enemy, as in not enough of it to get back on terms. We eventually succumbed 2-4, but there
was a lot to like about the team spirit.

Castlemaine dominated possession in the first half against Spring Gully United but with
shots hitting the woodwork, were held to 0-0 at half time.
Spring Gully came out much more positively in the second half as both teams battled to
penetrate each other’s defensive lines, but goals proved hard to get.
With a couple of minutes of extra time remaining, Abel Scopelliti made a run through midfield
then delivered a brilliant pass which curved around a line of four Spring Gully defenders into
the path of Javid Hashimi, who controlled the ball and crisply dispatched it into the back of the
net.
Castlemaine 1, Spring Gully 0.
Eli Rogers put in an excellent performance in midfield and was well supported by Arlo
Johnston and Javid Hashimi.
