Big Win to the Goldfields Women
Castlemaine Goldfields Football Club’s women remain in third place on the ladder after a big
win over Gisborne in the State League 4 West competition last Sunday.
Unfortunately Gisborne could muster only eight players by kick off. By “recruiting” a retired
player to goalkeep and borrowing two Castlemaine ‘bench players, Gisborne eventually
rustled up a starting 11.
Castlemaine was quickly into attack and within minutes Jayde Steer had headed a
magnificent goal from a Lyn West corner kick.
Ruby James broke through with the next goal after some great passing between Iona Moller
and Angela West.
Lyn West then scored from a great pass from daughter Rachel, and Bridget Woods sealed a
4-0 half time score with a lob high into the net.
Edwina Reid ran the ball though the centre, aided by Shelley Hillman, early in the second half
to keep the goals ticking over.
With plenty of fresh legs to bring from the bench, Castlemaine dominated play with some
skilful ball ‘carrying’ by Claudia Doolan and Jasmine West.
A sixth goal came when Jasmine slotted a rebounded ball past the keeper.
Castlemaine earned a spate of corners but could not get a touch on the ball until Tahnee
Ollerton finally tapped a pass neatly into the net for the seventh and final goal.
The familiar back line of Kate Forrest and Ruby Huzzey did not give any Gisborne striker a
hope of scoring.
Gisborne’s only corner for the match was quickly and efficiently dealt with by Cat Gaggin.
Division 1
Yet again, Castlemaine was very competitive but could not put the ball in the net, going down
1-3 to Forest Rangers in Wendouree last Sunday.
After dominating for most of the first half and missing a couple of one-on-one opportunities
with the Forest keeper, Castlemaine was unlucky to go in at half time 1-0 down.
The second half unfolded similarly. Castlemaine had lots of possession and played positive
football, creating several chances but unfortunately conceded two sloppy goals.
Through persistence, the team got one goal back when young gun Joe Gingell hit a sublime
volley with 10 minutes to go.
The Mainers continued to press hard but could not capitalize with more goals.
In another hard working team performance, they were unlucky not to have drawn or even won
the game.
Castlemaine was beaten 4-1 by Forest Rangers in Division 2, putting the team in a tough
position to win back fourth place on the ladder from Rangers with four rounds of the home
and away season remaining.
U14
This was a vintage champagne display by Castlemaine in the first half, the effervescence
supplied by Oliver Gunter's crack from 25 metres that flew in off the crossbar and then a
double from Jasper Berry-Smith.
His first was a classic; a rising drive that practically took the goal apart, finding the net after
coming off the crossbar and then in off the far post.
With a 3-0 lead at half time, what could go wrong?
Well, the bubbles unfortunately burst, with the 'Maine lacking the fizz and finesse to sustain
the dominance they enjoyed in the first period.
Despite another well-taken goal by Master Gunter, Castlemaine were somewhat fortunate to
finish the match with 4-4 draw.
The team will have to show more consistent form when they play the high scoring, second-
on-the-table Colts in their next match.
