Goldfields Women Kick off Season with a Win
Castlemaine’s women secured a 5-nil win against Sunbury United in their first foray into their
new metropolitan league, State League 4 West.
Coach Ray West urged the team to enjoy their return to competitive soccer and, with the usual
energetic contribution from his daughters Rachel, Angela and Jasmine, Castlemaine held the
ball in its attacking half for most of the first 40 minutes.
Backed up by midfielders Edwina Reid and Molly Forrest, there were at least 10 corner kicks
taken by Lyn West by half time.
Tahnee Ollerton eventually managed to put one into the net for a 1-0 lead at the break.
Goalkeeper Cat Gaggin did not get a touch until early in the second half when Sunbury came out
with new determination and actually pushed to earn several corners.
Contributions from new players Eve Merton and Jeska Rees supported Iona Moller in her
different role in the midfield instead of her usual keeper’s job.
Both Ruby Huzzey and Bridget Woods were moved briefly from their reliable defensive positions
with great success, each scoring goals from individual efforts as requested by their coach.
Lyn West continued to feed balls into the box and tenacious Tahnee Ollerton finished up with a
well- deserved hat trick.
Division 1 Men
Castlemaine Goldfields F.C. Division 1 played last seasons championship playoff winners
Ballarat with the knowledge that it could be a hard day at the office.
Despite losing, it was an improved performance showing glimpses of promise for the rest of
the season.
After conceding an early goal, Castlemaine raised their game and, with the help of lively
performances from Quinn Livingstone and Seb Lukoszek, were unlucky not to score.
Livingstone, promoted from the reserves this week, showed just why the coaching team had put
faith in him. Again, against the run of play, Ballarat scored right on half time to go ahead 2-0.
The second half started brightly enough for Castlemaine with Paul Hovius and Paul 'Essex'
Simms doing well.
As legs tired, however, the Mainers’ structure fell away and Ballarat took control in the later
stages of the game.
With Castlemaine chasing the game and looking for a couple of deserved goals, the opposition
capitalised and gave the final score a lopsided feel.
Division 2
There were plenty of ifs, buts and maybes to contemplate after Castlemaine’s 1-4 loss to
Ballarat.
But for good luck, good saves from ‘keeper Paul Hovius and some wayward shooting from
Ballarat, the Maine might have been 0-3 behind after 20 minutes.
They hung tough, however, and found themselves a goal ahead after 30 minutes due to the
verve, skill and persistence of winger Taro Muller, who followed up his own parried shot to score.
Soon after, Ballarat evened the ledger and 1-1 looked certain to be the half time score until a
Ballarat header hit the back of the net in the final breath of the half.
A questionable handball penalty then went against Castlemaine after 20 minutes of the second
half to give Ballarat a 3-1 lead.
The referee returned the favour shortly after when Thomas Moore hit the deck but unfortunately
for Castlemaine the resultant penalty shot was saved.
Ballarat steadied and scored once more to seal a solid win.
Taro Muller played a slashing first half on the wing for Castlemaine, while ‘keeper Paul Hovius
and the defenders lead by Oscar Wood and Otto Van Pagee Anderson saved the side time and
again.
Steve Argent, playing his first game for the season, added skill and a calm presence on the ball
when he came off the substitutes bench, while Dean Mendick tried his heart out as always.
Maybe next week.
Birthday Boy Abel Scores Four in U13s
The season opener against Strathdale Jets was a cracking encounter between two sides keen
to make their mark.
Strathdale stunned Castlemaine with three goals in the first half but after the break Abel
Scopelliti moved to centre-forward and got the Maine back in the match with four goals off his
own boot, the final one a long range shot which found the top corner of the net.
Castlemaine’s 4-3 lead was short-lived, however, as Strathdale equalised a minute before full
time to level scores at 4-4.
Abel Scopelliti’s four-goal performance was outstanding (and a great gift for his birthday the
following day), and he was well supported in midfield by Dorian Schaeff-Trouner and Charlie
Shooter.
