Goldfields Women in Winning Form
Castlemaine’s women maintained third place on the State League 4 West ladder after a
battling win over Point Cook Jets in a match that was rescheduled after a washout three
weeks ago.
In gusty conditions at Point Cook, both teams struggled to control the ball and play was very
scrappy for the first 20 minutes.
Castlemaine had several long shots at goal from Angela and Rachel West, all taken out of
the air by the Jets’ keeper.
Shelley Hillman and Molly Forrest were combining well in defence, bringing the ball to ground
and trying to set up some passing to feet.
Eventually Lyn West got on the end of a cross from Tahnee Ollerton and the Jets keeper
could not hold onto the ball as it slipped off her fingertips into the net.
The last 15 minutes of the half saw improved passing with Ruby James and Jasmine West
displaying their quick footwork to intercept and dispossess opponents.
With the change of ends, Castlemaine had the wind behind them and Jayde Steer in her
return match controlled the midfield with some great heading, supported by Eve Merton, to cut
out the Jet’s strikers.
Kate Forrest was instrumental in creating a number of corners as she turned defence into
attack but the Point Cook full back managed to deflect shots out of the box.
Iona Moller and Bridget Woods were under pressure in the last minutes as Point Cook
forwards had several lone runs from the halfway line. The final score line remained at 1-0 - a
good victory to the ‘Mainers in trying conditions.
Division 2
Castlemaine missed out on full points by a cat’s whisker against Warrnambool in their
continuing drive for a top four place on the Ballarat & District Soccer Association ladder.
The Mainers held on to a 1-0 lead for most of the second half against the higher-ranked
Wolves, defending tenaciously in the face of mounting attacks from the seaside visitors who
fielded a strong team that included some of their Division 1 players.
It was classy striker Gabe Gianni who had put Castlemaine ahead early in the second half
after the Maine had controlled the ball well up to that point in the match.
Then Warrnambool steadily lifted their pressure, building their attacks to a crescendo that
resulted in one goal in the final minutes to level scores and then a goalmouth scramble in
the final seconds that could have snatched victory but for the gallantry of ‘keeper Tim Gingell
and fellow defenders.
The reliable and resolute work of Captain Centre-back, Jim Kourkoulakos, was a feature of
Castlemaine’s performance. He was ably supported by youngsters Otto Van Pagee
Anderson, Pat Wallace and Daniel Woodlock, and by hard-running midfielder Aiden Windle.
The point from the 1-1 draw sent Castlemaine into fourth spot ahead of Forest Rangers.
Division 1
Fresh from victory over previously undefeated Ballarat, Warrnambool looked sharp and chock
full of confidence on their first visit to Castlemaine’s home pitch at Soldiers’ Memorial Park,
Chewton.
Despite some spectacular saves by ‘Maine keeper Jose Rodriguez, the visitors had three
goals by half time, two of them the result of slick passing, impressive ball control and well-
drilled team-work that sliced through Castlemaine’s hard-working but undermanned defence.
The lowlight of the match for Castlemaine came after half time when a slip by Keeper Jose
resulted in a broken arm that saw a lengthy delay in the match as he was taken off on a
stretcher then to hospital.
His replacement, Tristan Evans, followed on where his predecessor had left off, making
some brilliant saves in the face of an avalanche of shots.
The final score of 7-0 (two of those goals coming in the last two minutes of the match) was
no reflection on either keeper nor on the effort of the Castlemaine players who toiled hard all
game.
As one supporter commented, “We were simply outclassed by a better team.”
