Big Win for Goldfields Women
Castlemaine women went on a goal-scoring spree against lower ranked Laverton, winning
10-0 despite the muddy pitch and constant drizzle in the suburbs.
Ruby James was first to strike early and Bridget Woods, playing up front, followed with two
more in quick succession to leave the home team reeling.
Much improved passing was a feature of Castlemaine’s game, as Rachel, Jasmine and
Angela West were rewarded with goals before half time for a 6- score line.
A change of goalkeeper and fresh legs inspired Laverton, who came out and quickly earned
several corners.
Kate Forrest and Eve Merton maintained a solid defensive line, though, with Cat Gaggin
making several brilliant sliding saves as Laverton’s strikers threatened.
Lyn West continued to be instrumental in sending balls forward and Rachel West scored
three more for the half in a pleasing individual effort.
Lyn took on the keeper and was rewarded with a late goal. Ruby Huzzey also carried the ball
the length of the field and sent a long shot into the net with only minutes left.
Coach Ray West was delighted with the great team effort and looking forward to the clash at
home with top-of-the-Table Maidstone on Sunday.
Division 2
Castlemaine franked recent good form by testing top team Ballarat to the limit in an
entertaining 0-0 draw at a wet Soldiers’ Memorial Park last Sunday.
The result lifted the Maine off the bottom of the ladder.
The home team looked well organized with lanky, comeback goalkeeper Tim Gingell
plucking shots assuredly and making one brilliant, reflex save just on half time, and captain
Jim Kourkoulakos sweeping artfully behind his fellow defenders.
Left back Nathaniel Muller combined grit and fierce concentration to shut out Ballarat’s most
dangerous striker, and when Gabe Gianni came off the Maine substitutes bench for his first
appearance of the season, adding strength, speed and guile up front, the home side looked
dangerous.
Ballarat was on the back foot as Castlemaine wrested momentum and attacked repeatedly.
But no goal came.
As impetus swung back to Ballarat, Jim K., Jake Bovill, Thomas Moore, Dean Nendick and co
had to hang on tenaciously in defence to collect one point from a gallant draw.
Division 1
Like the boy with the barrow, injury-riddled Castlemaine had the job in front of it taking on
undefeated Ballarat, a side that had scored 48 goals in nine games while conceding only two.
Without first-choice midfielders Jono Burris, Angus Maclauran and Steve “Rhino” Marsh, the
Mainers ground away tenaciously, conceding only one goal in the first 39 minutes.
Four more followed in the final six minutes of the half, however, to leave the scores 0-5 at the
break.
With new keeper, Spaniard Jose el Milagro stopping all that it was humanly possible to stop
and Jesse Berry-Smith adding intensity to his skills at right back, Castlemaine held off
Ballarat until the 79th minute when a classy finish to a corner gave the visitors their sixth goal.
Another in the final minutes made it 7-0. Despite the scoreline, the undermanned Mainers
worked hard all game and at times looked dangerous up front when Gabe Gianni came off
the substitutes bench, just as he had done earlier playing in Division 2.
U14
In a match Castlemaine were unlucky not to win, the team was strong throughout and well
structured, with solid defenders lead by Milla Houghton and Rama Ragg-Hansen.
The midfield, marshaled by Ben Kennard, was tidy.
A well taken opening goal by Oliver Gunter seemed sufficient to take Castlemaine into break
1-nil up, but a break away goal by the opposition brought the teams in level.
Despite creating more opportunities in the second half, the 'Maine strikers could not find the
final, vital touch, due in no small part to the quite imposing presence of the Eaglehawk
'keeper.
Final score: 1-1.
Under 12
Castlemaine played great football in a 4-2 win over Spring Gully Red.
All players contributed to a strong defensive and offensive performance, without subs, and
left the field at the end of the game a happy but tired team.
Best Players: Will Burton, Otis Showell-Roche, Sequani MacCallum-Telford
