Castlemaine V Maidstone
Division 1
On a day icy enough to freeze the paws on a polar bear, Castlemaine
supporters left Moorshead Park, Ballarat, well satisfied with the team’s
performance against North United.
From kick-off, players were relaxed on the ball, holding it calmly and finding
teammates with accurate passing.
Their movement off the ball was good, they talked to each other effectively
and the team held shape better than at any stage this season.
As a result, the game was still delicately poised at 0-0 with 15 minutes to go
when Taro Muller, who ran up and down the left wing like a scalded cat all
game, ran onto a pass in the box and timed and placed his low shot expertly
despite being under fierce pressure.
His goal put the Maine ahead 1-0. But as often happens, that goal seemed to
jolt the opposition into action, and within a minute United had levelled scores
from a free kick.
Two more goals in the frantic final 10 minutes gave United a 3-1 win that did
not truly reflect the tightness of the tussle.
As ever, Maine’s gutsy, experienced chrome domes, Jono Burris and Paul
Simms, lead the way for their team, ably supported by Jake Bovill, who played
his defensive midfield role superbly, young sweeper Oscar Wood, stand-in
keeper Gabe Gianni and the rest of a committed, disciplined team.
Division 2
Illness, injury and players weekending away severely weakened Castlemaine
as they took on top team North United.
Missing the strength and experience of some “old heads”, the Maine
youngsters toiled hard in the face of a quick, slick passing game served up by
United.
By half time, Maine keeper Tim Gingell, in his third game back from
retirement, had been busier than a blowfly in a manure pile, making save after
save.
Despite his efforts, United was still 4-0 ahead.
Castlemaine played a steadier, more organized second half, restricting United
to two more goals.
Otto Van Pagee Anderson in midfield was among the Mainers’ best players,
along with captain Jim Kourkoulakos in defence and hard-working striker
Gabe Gianni.
Women
Castlemaine were expecting a tough match against the ladder leaders, but
were left shell-shocked when the well-drilled Maidstone combination scored
within a minute of kick off and again soon after.
A couple of quick position changes helped Castlemaine regain some midfield
control with Iona Moller and Shelley Hillman working hard to intercept
Maidstone passes.
When Lyn West copped a high foot to the head just outside the box, her
penetrating free kick deflected from the Maidstone wall and then prevented by
a hand- ball breach from hitting the net. She sent the consequential penalty
past the Maidstone keeper for the Maine’s first goal.
The last 15 minutes of the half was a skilful display from both teams with
Tahnee Ollerton, Angela West and Molly Forrest combining well and putting
the Maidstone defence under pressure.
But a quick breakaway saw Maidstone score just seconds before half time for
3-1 score line.
Both teams returned to the pitch refreshed and defenders Ruby Huzzey,
Bridget Woods, Kate Forrest and Eve Burton were immediately tested as
Maidstone rallied.
The off side rule was well implemented by Castlemaine, but eventually a
forward took on keeper Cat Gaggin and put the ball past her.
The match continued with quick end to end play. Jeska Rees provided some
fresh legs late in the half, but Maidstone eventually scored again as the
Castlemaine girls tired. A 5-1 loss against the top team was a respectable
result in a high standard match.
