Women
With no appointed referee arriving to officiate, the women’s match against Yarraville got off to an
unsettled start when coach Ray West was obliged to change roles and don his referee’s
uniform.
Hoping to improve on the result from the first encounter, Castlemaine opted to play against the
strong wind in the first half.
For a tense 30 minutes Castlemaine’s defence held firm. With Kate Forrest and Ruby Huzzey
showing cool heads to dispossess Yarraville strikers, play was very even.
Claudia Doolan and Edwina Reid managed to thwart any Yarraville run down the wings and
penetrating kicks from Jayde Steer and Lyn West helped force several corners, with Angela
West bringing the ball to ground in the box.
Yarraville broke through eventually with a good passage of play and then scored again through
a penalty following the desperate effort of Eve Merton to prevent a goal. Iona Moller back in
goals, was left to face the penalty kick.
The second half saw an invigorated Castlemaine attacking hard, with Shelley Hillman and Maya
Cook-Tonkin using the tail wind to outmanoeuvre opponents.
Tahnee Ollerton was involved in scrambled play right on the goal line and, with pressure from
Ruby James, an errant defender kick rolled over the line.
Inspired by the 2-1 score line, Bridget Woods moved up forward and seconds later crossed a
ball from deep in the corner which was met perfectly by Rachel West and slammed into the net.
A draw would have been a deserved result, but Yarraville was not to be denied and in a great
individual effort the player who scored the own goal redeemed herself by dribbling from the
centre and scoring with just minutes to play.
Stunned, Castlemaine continued to push forward but the full time whistle sounded a 3-2 win to
Yarraville.
Division 2
An undermanned Division 2 team took on the might of Warrnambool on a bitterly cold, grey day
by the seaside.
With key players such as Aiden Windle, Dean Nendick and Hugh Feary missing, a number of
players had to have their time on the pitch rationed so they could also play in Division 1
immediately afterward.
In the circumstances, the final result, a 2-0 loss, was a good effort. Both of Warrnambool's
goals were scored within a few minutes of each other around the half hour mark.
Castlemaine pressed hard for the remainder of the first half following the goals, and for all of
the second, possessing as much, if not more, of the ball, but was unable to score.
U14
The ‘Maine started very well against the high flying Colts, scoring twice early on, both via Olly
Gunter.
A Ben Kennard strike shaved the post, but stayed out, leaving Castlemaine ahead 2-0 at the
break.
A notable goalkeeping display by Gabe Thomas, with four top class saves, was not enough to
keep a resurgent Colts at bay in the second half.
The ‘Maine eventually went down 5-2, but there was a lot to like, especially in the first half, which,
if replicated, will keep the rampant home support happy in the last match of the season this
coming Saturday.
U13
Castlemaine put in a very good team performance in their home game against Strathdale SC
Jets, a game that was hard fought right up until the final whistle.
Midway through the first half, Cohen Saunders scored one of the goals of the season with a
superbly struck volley from range that gave the Strathdale keeper no chance.
By half time, Castlemaine had clearly controlled possession and tested the Jets’ keeper but the
score stayed at 1-0.
The Jets picked up their game in the second half and were unfortunate to hit the Castlemaine
crossbar.
After this near miss, a precision pass through right midfield which penetrated a defensive wall
of four Jets players was met by Dorian Schaerf-Trauner
and duly dispatched into the net from close range, leaving the final score at 2-0 to Castlemaine.
Yau-Ka Lam was outstanding in goal. Charlie Shooter controlled midfield and Dominic Doolan
played another excellent defensive game.
