Division 1

Castlemaine had high hopes of faring well against Forest Rangers at Soldier’s Memorial Park,
Chewton, last Sunday, but were overwhelmed by the visitors’ enthusiasm and physicality.

A late goal gave the Ballarat team a commanding 4-1 win.

Castlemaine missed the aerial strength of absent centre back Paul Simms, with Forest
dominating heading duels at both ends of the pitch. Two of their four goals came from headers.

The poise on the ball displayed by the ‘Mainers the previous weekend went missing under the
physical pressure applied by Rangers.

One of the home team’s highlights was a well-taken goal from flying winger Taro Muller, his
second in two weeks.

Another was the flamboyance of keeper Jose Rodriguez, who at one point tried to dribble past
three oncoming Forest attackers, then decided discretion was the better part of valour and dived
on the ball outside his area, thus conceding a free kick and winning himself a Yellow Card.

Midfielders Jake Bovill, Angus Maclauran and Tristan Evans were among Castlemaine’s better
players, along with defenders Harley Dingle and Angus Campbell.

Division 2

Castlemaine eked out a tenacious 1-0 victory over Forest Rangers in a match notable for
disallowed goals at each end.

First, Castlemaine’s Quinn Livingstone struck a long-range shot that seemed to clear the Forest
keeper and sneak under the crossbar.

When the ball bobbed up behind the goals, however, confusion reigned, with the referee
eventually deciding he could not award the goal despite the protestations of Castlemaine
players.

Fortunately for the ‘Maine, Gabe Gianni, who played well as goalkeeper in the first half, swapped
ends of the pitch to play as a striker in the second, and, in one of many promising moments,
displayed his class to goal.

Controversy then switched to the opposite end of the pitch when a cross by Forest bounced
from the top of the crossbar back into a goalmouth tangle from which Forest bundled it into the
net.

Again ‘Maine players protested, this time claiming the ball had been out before the goal was
scored.

The linesman concurred and the goal was disallowed.

In the end, Gabe Gianni’s goal was the one that separated the teams.  He was among
Castlemaine’s best, ably supported by midfielders Otto Van Pagee Anderson and Steve “Rhino”
Marsh, and defenders Jim Kourkoulakos and Nathaniel Muller.

The women’s games was cancelled due to a flooded pitch.

U14

In a tightly contested first half, Castlemaine's Oliver Gunter scored early on but his goal was
cancelled out by the opposition just before the break despite resolute defending by Tenzin De
Podolinsky and Milla Houghton.

The second half showed just how well the team can play.

Stand out performances came from 'keeper Gabe Thomas, winger Audrey Butt-Merton,
midfielder Jaspar Berry-Smith and forward Ben Kennard, whose probing passes provided the
opportunities for striker Olly Gunter to increase his game goal tally to five.

A sixth goal, a well taken penalty by Ben Kennard, took the final score to 6-2.

U13

A waterlogged ground at Spring Gully made playing conditions tough with goal opportunities
difficult to come by.

With Castlemaine having most of the possession, Billy Weiss broke the deadlock with a well-
crafted goal shortly before half time.

After the break, Spring Gully United White pressed much more strongly, eventually scoring a
goal that tied the score at 1-1.

In the end, a draw was a fair result.

Javid Hashimi’s performance stood out for Castlemaine. He was well supported by Billy Weiss
and Arlo Johnson.

U12

At the end of a hard fought match the Castlemaine U12s walked off the pitch with a 2-1 victory
over Eaglehawk.

The members of both teams left nothing in reserve, playing with good spirit while producing an
entertaining match in which the result was not certain until the final whistle.
Three best players were Harrison Adams, Eli Saunders and Jimi Fawcett.
