Castlemaine V Castlemaine

Division 1

A slice of good luck atop a big serve of hard work gave Castlemaine a tasty 1-1 draw against
Ballarat visitors, North United, at Chewton Soldiers’ Memorial Park last Sunday.

With whispers of Spring in the air, the two teams fought out an even first half in which sound
goalkeeping by Gabe Gianni for Castlemaine kept scores to 0-0 at the break.

The pattern continued in the second half with Castlemaine’s defence lead by Angus Campbell
and James Leversha holding firm while midfielders Angus Maclauran and Jono Burris (until
subbed off injured) pushed the ball forward to hard working Quinn Livingstone, who played a
Lone Ranger role up front.

But it was United who scored first, with an innocuous looking backheader creeping past
defenders into the net.

Then, in the final minute, Castlemaine won a corner that lobbed innocuously across the box
only to be sliced off the boot of a United defender into his own net, thus levelling scores.

United were crestfallen and Castlemaine felt like winners, their scrapping and endeavor having
been rewarded with a stroke of last-minute good fortune.

Division 2

Castlemaine took the game up to higher ranked North United, dominating possession early
and looking likely to score with Hugh Feary, Harrison Cocks and Seb Lukazek creating havoc in
attack.

It was Lukazek who created the first goal with a zippy run and skillful cross from the right flank
that striker Feary tucked into the net at second try at the 15-minute mark.

Late in the half, United started to gain more possession and forced Maine keeper Tim Gingell
into some brave saves.

The second half was more even with both teams creating scoring chances.

Maine midfielders Dean Nendick and Aiden Windle scrapped hard, defended doggedly and
linked defence and attack with their relentless running.

Captain Jim Kourkoulakos was the Rock of Gibraltar down back, ably supported by Nathaniel
Muller, Martin Myles and Daniel Woodlock, while Gabe Gianni injected speed, skill and class
into the attack.

It was he who collected a long clearance from defence and squeezed a superb pass to
sprinting winger Harrison Cocks, whose deft touch and well-placed shot beat the United keeper
as Castlemaine rampaged the length of the pitch to take a 2-0 lead.

The win anchored the home side in fourth spot on the ladder, a fact that was reflected in the
gusto with which players belted out the club song afterwards.

Under 14

The Castlemaine derby lived up to all expectations in front of a “record crowd” at Chewton
Soldiers’ Memorial Park.

Both teams were up for this one and end-to-end action in the first half was highlighted by a
blinding display by the ‘opposition’ Castlemaine Green ‘keeper, Tom Every, and by Ben
McDonald, who netted for Gold.

At half-time the game was in the balance at 1-1.

After the interval, Ben Kennard added to his portfolio of this season’s well-taken goals, soaring
like an eagle to head in from a corner.

Mason Tacke notched a third and Gold looked certain winners at 3-1.

Back came Green to goal twice, however, taking the score to 3-3 with just minutes to go.

A draw would have been a fair result, but Oliver Gunter, ignoring the script, secured a ‘Maine
Gold victory, their fourth in succession, with a last minute strike.

A good game played in great spirit, with a fantastic result (for Gold).

Under 13

After a relatively slow start, Castlemaine caught fire with two goals each to Javid Hashimi and
Cohen Saunders, along with singles to Eli Rogers and Billy Weiss, leaving Colts United reeling
at 0-6 at half time.

The second half continued in the same vein with Charlie Shooter, Cohen Saunders, Javid
Hashimi and Ronan Neilson Bridgefoot all scoring.

Facing a 12-0 deficit with a minute to go, Colts found the back of the net, ending the game at 12-
1 in Castlemaine’s favour.

The comprehensive win, in which Javid Hashimi, Charlie Shooter and Cohen Saunders all
scored hat-tricks, was a comprehensive one with all players contributing to a great team effort.

Javid’s great form and surgical strikes on the Colts’ goal earned him the player of the match.
Cohen Saunders and Charlie Shooter also produced impressive performances.

Women

Castlemaine’s women continued their season of success with another convincing win in the
suburbs, this time over Sunshine Eagles.
The Msine was on the offensive early with Edwina Reid and Angela West carrying the ball down
the wing and creating several corners, and Lyn West capping off some great passing from
Jayde Steer and Eve Merton to score one of her long bomb goals from outside the box.
Sunshine, with only the bare eleven, increased their physicality and after Rachel West was
bumped off the ball and Lyn was fouled just outside the box, the referee finally awarded a free
kick, which Lyn lobbed over the Sunshine wall and into the top corner of the net.
Shelley Hillman and Claudia Doolan, in her first game for the year, brought fresh legs into the
match before half time and helped set up Tahnee Ollerton who scored just before the break.
The Eagles changed their game plan in the second half, sitting all their backs up high to try and
force Castlemaine offside. It lead to very congested play with a 20-metre buffer created in front of
their keeper.
Ruby James and Iona Moller both found themselves caught in fierce tackling in the middle of the
pitch and eventually Kate Forrest and Bridget Woods, sent up forward as strikers, were able to
capitalize on the space, both scoring by running on to balls released from midfield.
A 6-0 score line was a pleasing result and should consolidate the girl’s third placing on the
ladder.
