Goldfields Women hang on to win
Castlemaine claimed another, scalp defeating Maribyrnong Swifts 2-1.
With all the early attack, Castlemaine struggled to find the net despite shots coming from
every angle.
Eventually, after some improved passing to teammates’ feet, Lyn West cracked a ball in from
the edge of the box which, though within reach of the Swift’s keeper, slipped through her
hands and over the line.
The result encouraged striker Tahnee Ollerton to pressure the keeper and she was
supported by Angela West, who slotted a well-hit ball into the net just before half time.
Looking to increase the lead, Shelley Hillman and Jasmine West combined well to earn a
number of corners, none of which could be converted despite the roving runs of Ruby Huzzey
and Kate Forrest.
Tired legs began to set in and the Swifts took advantage of a couple of loose passes to score
with just three minutes left in the match.
Castlemaine rallied defensively with Bridget Woods and Cat Gaggin desperate to keep the
score at a 2-1 win.
The girls are looking forward to a home match against Truganinna in a fortnight.
Division 1
A combination of misfortune, errors and a committed and skilful opposition lead to
Castlemaine’s convincing defeat at the hands (or feet) of Forest Rangers in Wendouree.
Misfortune came in the guise of a handled ball that was let go by the referee, enabling a
Ranger’s midfielder to run into a clear one-on-one with Maine keeper Tristan Evans. A deft
finish left Castlemaine defenders gobsmacked and unhappy at the non-call.
Further hard luck came in the shape of a deflected shot that stranded Tristan and flew
unerringly into the corner of the net. Not even Superman could have stopped it.
Then to add further insult to injury, a speculative shot from near the halfway line floated long
and deep, and gently nestled in the top corner for a third Ranger’s goal.
All the while, Castlemaine’s midfielders and defenders worked hard to stem the tide.
Defensive midfielder Jono Burris was like salt and pepper – in everything. Steve “Rhino”
Marsh used his strength and courage in the air to good effect, and youngsters Tristan Van
Pagee Anderson and Oscar Wood showed maturity and poise under pressure.
As always, central defenders Paul Simms and James Leversha worked hard but Rangers’
attacks just kept coming, resulting in a 0-5 final score.
Division 2
For the second week in succession, Castlemaine surrendered a lead late in the game to
come away with a draw.
“It’s a draw and a point away from home, which is good,” captain Jim K told the team
afterwards. “But I have to tell you, it feels like a loss.”
The Maine had worked itself into a strong position with a 3-1 lead deep into the second half.
A penalty earned by Sage Surya had been neatly put away by Tristan Evans, while earlier,
Hugh Feary had finished some sound team work with a polished goal.
Jake Bovill scored the Maine’s other goal.
Forest Rangers built momentum on the back of a goal with 10 minutes remaining then
swamped the Maine in the final minutes to score again and level scores at 3-3.
U14
In a tale of two halves, Castlemaine displayed a concerted, well-organised effort in the first.
Good passing, good team structure and good movement off the ball were evident, with Oliver
Gunter’s sixth goal of the season taking the teams in level at half time.
Then the second half! Maybe the oranges had been tampered with, perhaps the wet weather
dampened the team spirit and enthusiasm, but whatever the reason, Castlemaine’s passes
went astray, team structure was not maintained and movement off the ball was well down
from first half efforts.
The opposition took advantage and the goals started to flow, the Maine eventually going
down 8-1.
U13
Following a bye the previous week, Castlemaine came out blazing in its home match against
Epsom FC.
An early goal from Dorian Schaerf-Trauner triggered a series of attacking moves from
Castlemaine that led to goals from Abel Scopelliti (2), Eli Rogers, Ronan Neilson-Bridgefoot
and Charlie Shooter, giving the home side a 6-nil lead at half time and leaving the visitors
reeling.
After the break, Abel Scopelliti scored again, giving him his second hat trick in the two games
played this season.
Goals from Cohen Saunders and Javid Hashimi highlighted the strength of the Castlemaine
midfield and forward line, with seven players getting their names on the score sheet.
A late penalty for Epsom was converted with the game ending 9-1. Luca Tully was
outstanding in midfield while Abel Scopelliti and Eli Rogers also put in high quality
performances.
U12
It was another victory to Castlemaine but this time the goal scoring was shared amongst five
players for a win against Spring Gully White, 6-1.
Castlemaine continued to demonstrate great ball skills, passing and playing as a team, even
though the weather made it difficult.
They played very strong offense, and the defense was often quick to return the ball back to
attack.
It was an excellent game played by all. Three best players: Ernie Milbret, Will Burton, Otis
Showell-Roche.
